Chris's Crazy Contraptions

Chris's Crazy Contraptions

My name is Chris Shadwick and I love to build things. My love affair with destructing, constructing and reconstructing stuff began when I was very young. When I got a new toy the first I did was take it apart to find out how it worked. Of course in my day toys were not quite so complicated but had lots more parts! I learned a lot from taking those toys apart though...some I got back together some I didn't but either way I had a lot of fun. Starting in jr. high I began taking shop and electronics class and continued all through high school. This started a life long love affair with woodworking, electronics and technology. Well I'm a lot older now but not much wiser, I still buy toys just to tear them apart. The difference is today I try to make them into something more useful or just unusual. Hopefully I might give you some ideas!

My 3D Printer

My latest obsession is 3D Printing!

On August 23, 2018 I made my fist print on my newly assembled Anet A8 3D printer and I haven't stopped yet! I have have had a lot of hobbies in my 61 years but I have to say this is one that I won't put down. I have already printed useful items like new feet for our box fan, clips for the LED light strips, a pop top opener for my wife, and even customized cigarette cases for us. (Yes I know it's bad for us so no hate please). I have always been a tinkerer and builder so this was the perfect thing for me. Not only could I now make parts I needed but I have the printer to tinker with too. I would say most of the first 3 weeks was printing upgrades for the printer, printing a few fun things along the way, of course. As much as I like building things I like learning just as much and 3D printing gives you plenty to learn! Not only do you have to learn the ins and outs of the printer, but if you want to print your own designs, then you have to learn some kind of 3D modeling software. Fortuneately there are literly millions of models available to download and print. Most are free on sites like Thingiverse but some you have to pay for on sites like CGTrader. If you are looking to get into 3D printing Thingiverse is a great place to start, also, look for for groups on Facebook as they can be a great help! In the mean time you are welcome to see my journey on the following pages. Thanks for visiting and I hope you enjoy.
